When I was married in the Borg, my mother-in-law was famous for giving me horrible gifts. And I had to grin and act like I liked it. One time she and my father-in-law went to Scotland. When they came back they brought all of us gifts. Now to give some credit, I am not exactly easy to get gifts for, I am very particular. But when it comes to colors, I am pretty self-explanatory. All you have to do is look at the colors in my house and you pretty much have it. She had told my sister-in-law, that she knew how picky I was and that if I didn't like what she bought that it was no problem I could trade with someone else or whatever. Well, she had bought a wool throw. That was fine, but it was this pukey yellow and grey. It had a strange resemblance to baby poop. My sister-in-law knew I would hate the color and offered to take it off my hands. Well needless to say it started world war three in the family. Whatever, no matter what I did in that family it was "damned if you do and damned if you don't".
Now Thinker and I have it figured out. First of all he knows my taste quite well. On my first birthday together he bought me beautiful diamond and sapphire earrings. On our anniversary we went shopping and bought a gorgeous antique diamond pinkie ring. For this birthday I saw a diamond anniversary band that I adored. He pointed out to me that it was indeed an anniversary band and for five years. I thought quickly (and meant what I said) "How about ten years for each diamond?" He said, "Fifty years? Deal!!!" I am a happy woman!!!
For Christmas the living room and kitchen are getting painted. What more could a woman ask for?

Swyzel (bet I spelled that wrong),
When I was eighteen, I was moving to Shenandoah Valley because the need was greater. And though I learned much from the experience, I wish I had paid attention to my inner voice, which was practically yelling at me to think for myself.
I ignored it, and ended up being in an abusive sixteen and a half year marriage within the org. And staying in the org. until I was thirty-eight. A lot of wasted years. My birthday is Monday, I'll be forty-two. I have to tell you I didn't start thinking and living until I got out.
Don't let that happen. Follow the good advice here and start living! Sounds like you are well on your way!! Good for you being in college.
I think reading Crisis of Conscience would be a wonderful start. It really opened up my eyes.
Be ready for a real roller coaster ride though, since your family is in. It is tough, but well worth a little heart ache to be who you are!
Good luck!!

Marilyn and all,
This is just so very sad. To see how a religion can affect so many lives in such a detrimental way.
My mother is 59 years old and my father is 64. I have thought ahead to the time when they actually die, and how they will have missed out on the happiest years of my life.
And yes, they too have blamed me for cutting them off, which is so not true. I called for over a year several times a week hoping things would get better. They never did.
At the time of my one year anniversary with Thinker, my mother told me she really didn't care about my life. That was in July 2001, I haven't called since. What is the point. But it still makes me very sad. And hearing others saying what is in my mind is sad as well.
Thanks for sharing, I wish the best for everyone who has to face this issue!

Marilyn,
I am not sure what my designation would be in the believer line. My husband and I don't believe in a God that the mainstream religions teach.
A young friend and I (she does believe in God) used the Ouji board it being the first time for me.
I found it very interesting as it did spell out some very wierd things. I definitely don't believe in demons. Someone mentioned the action as being something scientific that hasn't been explained yet. I am in that category of believing. There have just been too many unexplained paranormal occurrences. I have also had quite a few other experiences that I couldn't explain. I am not a highly imaginitive person I know these things weren't something I conjured up. But I can't explain them either.

FARTING at the meetings
by gambler ini'm sure you all have some good comical stories of pple farting during prayer or other quiet times during meeting.
as a personal experience of mine, the night before i had eaten a frozen pizza, doritos, and some old chocolate milk.
this combination produced the worst smelling brew i have ever had.

OK, OK. I'll admit it I was the culprit. I too bent down to pick my songbook up off the floor. It was one of the totally unsuspected surprises. Fortunately there was a young boy sitting next to me who was well known for his uncontrolled flatulence. All I did was give him a dirty look! To this day, he has never forgotten it. The more he denied it the more everyone thought it was him.
It was a close shave for me. But through the disgrace of another I saved face.

What is this about Marking?
by Missie Eff ini have a good freind here with me this evening.
(celtic, if you're around you know her - it's liane).
there is something that has always puzzled both of us.

I think Lindy is correct on the Book explanation. But as others have mentioned, it seems to be done differently in different congregations according to the elder's opinion.
I was marked albeit unofficially. I'll tell the story since I find it amusing.
We were finished with field service one day and I had been in a car group with two young boys fleshly brothers. Well they saw a frog and were afraid to pick it up. So being the wild and crazy woman I am, I picked it up. It promptly proceeded to pee in my hand. The word just popped out of my mouth. I said, "Oh shit". Several days later I heard through the formidable grapevine that I had been marked.
Usually though I believe there is a talk given specifically discussing the wrongdoing and people are left in no doubt as to who and what it involves.
The whole process is ridiculous IMO. And is just exactly what HadEnuf said, an organized form of cruelty. Her son's case is a case in point. How ridiculous. And how heartbreaking for all involved, and from the sounds of it totally uncalled for.

The JW religion or the person, whose fault is it?
by larc ini just read the tragic story of the man in chicago who beat his daughter to death.
i have read stories here and on silentlambs about sexual abuse.. my question is: how much fault can be placed on the religion and how much on the perversions of a particular individual?
i frankly don't know the answer to this question.
-
thinkers wife
Good question Larc. And one I have often pondered. Abuse in many forms is running rampant in their org., IMO.
I do believe their vow of secrecy lends more opportunity for this kind of thing to occur.
I was not raised abusively by my JW parents. But because of their belief system, a rapist in the org. got away with it. I know because I was the victim. Also some young child molesters got away with it, I was also the victim. The not taking people to court especially your "brothers" had a large part to do with that.
Also putting up with an abusive partner in silence was part of my life. Definitely due to the religious tenants I so strongly held to.
The others brought up good points as well though.
Perhaps we will never really know.
